Leonardo DiCaprio isn’t trying to attract attention with his clothes, and yet we keep finding ourselves talking about what he’s wearing (okay, and doing, most of the time). Mostly because, for an above-average actor, he makes really average-guy mistakes with his outfits. Buttoning both suit buttons, for instance, or buying everything in two sizes bigger than necessary. Here’s another so-close-and-yet-so-far style moment from the newly minted Oscar winner: aggressively cuffed jeans. By our estimates, there’s about six inches of extra denim trying to be stuffed into DiCaprio’s hem, a.k.a. what not to do. For the record, here’s how to roll your pants the right way.

Take Stock of Your Outfit

A rolled hem and bare ankles are aces for when it’s warm outside and you’re wearing chill, casual layers. Leonardo’s slip-ons are spot on, but the top half of his look—a heavy hoodie and a quilted vest—looks like it belongs in a different climate entirely. This was maybe not the right moment for such a blatant flash of bare skin.

Find the Right Type of Roll

If your pants are cut slim, you can get away with a straightforward roll. Keep it messy and don’t overthink it. One flip and you’re done. If they’re a bit slouchier, like Leo’s jeans, you’re probably better off taking them to the tailor and getting them hemmed to hit at the right length, and thenyou can follow the same move above should you want to up the shoe-to-hem ratio.

Know When to Stop

There is rolling your pants as a style move, and then there is rolling your pants to dip your feet in the ocean. If you look like you’re wearing capris and you’re not standing on the beach somewhere, you’ve rolled too high. Generally speaking, one or two one- or two-inch rolls will do just fine. Leo’s cuffs look like they’re verging on three inches, which is part of the problem.

If all else fails, look in the mirror and ask yourself whether you look like “cuffed-pants guy” and/or an extra from Newsies. If the answer is yes, just take things down a notch. Literally.
